On June 29th, Sonny Barger, who lived in Livermore, California, passed away due to

liver cancer. Barger was an American outlaw and ex-criminal, as well as an author. He

was best known for his biking, but he was both the founder of the Hells Angels

Motorcycle Club and the writer of 5 books.

It was announced on Barger’s Facebook page that Sonny Barger had died due to liver

cancer. His page read, “If you are reading this message, you’ll know that I’m gone. I’ve

asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing.”

“To become a real man, you need to join the army first and then do some time in jail,”

said Sonny Barger in his autobiography.

Sonny Barger was once imprisoned for 5 years, after he was convicted of conspiracy to

kill members of a rival motorcycle club, and to blow up their headquarters. Barger was

also imprisoned for 3 years on the account for assorted drug and firearms charges.

Barger wrote a flurry of books, including “Hells Angel,” “Dead in Five heartbeats” “Let’s

Ride: Sonny Barger’s Guide to Motorcycles,” “6 Chambers, 1 Bullet: A Novel,”

“Freedom,” and many more.

Barger was diagnosed with throat cancer due to intensive smoking, and had his vocal

cords removed. To speak, he had a surgically inserted hole in his throat, giving him a

raspy voice.

Barger was also the founder of the club “Hells Angels,” which was an all-male, mainly

White motorcycle club. “I needed a close-knit club of men who could jump on their

bikes, ride cross-country if they wanted to, and not abide by rules or clocks,” said

Barger.

He had a total of four wives throughout his lifetime. His first wife, Elsie George, died in a

self-induced abortion. His next two wives, Sharon Gruhlke and Beth Noel Black were

divorced. In 2005, he married Zorana Katzakian.

Barger lived in Phoenix, where he was dropped from his duties in Hells Angels, but still

remained as a rank-and-file member. He started and ran a motorcycle

repair shop, and did mild activities such as yoga and lifting weights.
