Tens of thousands of years ago, the Neanderthals used to use their fingers to leave marks on the walls. Now, geologists have found these ancient sketches.
“The engravings could only have been made by Neanderthals,” explains Jean-Claude Marquet, an author of the discovery.
The Neanderthals came before humans did and they wandered the globe about 400,000 years ago. They were experts at hunting for food. They hunted Ice Age animals, such as bison, red deer, woolly mammoths, and much more.
There are multiple theories on how the Neanderthals went extinct. Some people say that the early humans competed against them for food and other resources. Other people say that the weather conditions picked them off.
About 57,000 years ago, the Neanderthals left markings in a cave at La Roche-Cotard, France.
According to BBC, “The Neanderthal art is thought to be among one of the oldest creations of its kind in Western Europe. It was created across eight separate panels on the upper part of the cave wall.”
However, scientists are still unclear of what these ancient markings that the Neanderthals left behind mean.
