Major travel problems across the US on December 28th caused by extreme weather conditions led thousands of flights to be delayed or canceled. Lots of people were struggling to get home after the holidays.
As reported by FlightAware, over 9,000 flights were delayed, and more than 300 flights were canceled by the time of Saturday evening. The severe weather conditions affected major airports like Dallas Fort Worth, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, where like half of their flights were delayed.
Varying weather problems occurred in the different parts of the US. Heavy rain and snow are present in the western area of the US, while storms and tornadoes affect the southern areas. Fog and storms made things really bad in Texas, especially in Dallas Fort Worth, which is a major hub for American Airlines. Earlier in the week, technical issues had already disrupted flights there.
The long delays frustrated many passengers. According to the New York Times, Regina Esquivel, who was a passenger, waited four hours on a plane without snacks or drinks in Houston. She said, “People are so frustrated, it’s insane.” Ashley Allen’s connecting flight to Florida was canceled in Dallas, leaving her there without any good options.
Though delays eased later in the day, many travelers were left waiting or rescheduling their plans. For some people like Ms. Allen, the situation was disappointing but unavoidable. “You just have to deal with it,” she said disappointedly. She pointed out the delays were really disappointing, but she was trying to accept the reality.
