After injuring herself in last year’s Wimbledon, it seemed like it would be the last Wimbledon for Serena Williams to ever compete in, but this year Williams is back, motivated to do better.
Last year during the first set of the first-round match at Wimbledon, Serena Williams slipped and tore her right hamstring. She fought hard to continue the match, but she eventually had to stop playing.
Williams is now working hard and continuing training, saying she has a “tremendous amount of motivation” and, “since the match ended, that was always on my mind.”
Williams also has a new coach she’s working with. For the past 10 years, Williams worked with Patrick Mouratoglou, a Frenchman who is now coaching Simona Halep, another tennis player who beat Williams at the 2019 Wimbleton.
Now, she’s working with Eric Hechtman, a former tennis player at the University of Miami and a director of the Royal Palm Tennis Club in Miami.
Hechtman has known both Serena and her sister, Venus Williams for several years and has been coaching Venus since 2019. Now, he will be coaching both Serena and Venus.
Other than tennis, Williams has been spending time with her daughter, Olympia, and has started working in business, having created her own venture capital firm.
William says, “A part of me feels like that is a little bit more of my life now than tournaments. When you do have a venture company, you do have to go all in. It definitely takes literally all my extra time.”
Williams hasn’t competed once since last year’s Wimbleton, but she still has been working hard and balancing her work-life schedule, aiming to have a comeback from last year.
