Arizona House Speaker and state representative, Rusty Bowers, refused to overturn the 2020 election results for Donald Trump despite constant pressure in the past few months. He does not support the overturn since he believes that it would be a violation to his oath to the Constitution.
Bower has been faced with many important figures as well as citizens who are trying to make him change the 2020 election results. Angry citizens filmed his home, held parades to ridicule him, and even threatened his neighbors with a gun. Synchronously, his own congressman and loyal Trump fan, Rep. Andy Biggs, asked Bower to renounce authority away from the electors. Many other figures also approached him with similar requests.
Trump’s 10,457 vote loss in Arizona also undermined Bowers career. Bowers had voted and campaigned for trump. When Trump lost, Bowers’ future in politics suffered. His refusal to change the results also hurt his image. Now, Bowers is facing issues in Arizona’s 2nd constitution district election.
However, Bowers’ biggest challenge may have had nothing to do with Trump supporters. The constant protests took place as Bowers’ daughter, Kacey, was experiencing long term sickness and died soon after.
Despite everything he is facing, Bower maintains his original stance and won’t change the election results. When asked why, he said that he does “[n]ot want to be a winner by cheating. I will not play with laws I swore allegiance to.” He then follows this up with “[h]ow else will I ever approach [god] in the wilderness of life knowing that I ask this guidance only to show myself a coward in defending the course … he led me to take.” Everything he says and does is due to him being more worried of how his creator would judge him, and has nothing to do with what others think.
