Russia is now using Video Games as a propaganda medium for the Ukraine War.

For example, Russian players on Minecraft, a popular game created by Microsoft, re-enacted the battle for Soledar, a city in Ukraine that Russia conquered. The players posted it on their country’s most popular social media network, VKontakte. On a channel on World of Tanks, a warfare game, players also commemorated the 78th anniversary of the Nazi defeat in May along with a reenactment of the Soviet Union’s 1945 parade of tanks in Moscow. On another popular game, Roblox, as the The New York Times reports, there was a user who “created an array of Interior Ministry forces in June to celebrate the national holiday, Russia Day.”

These games, along with social media, have been used to justify the Ukrainian War. Players on these popular games are using propaganda to convince the younger audiences of Discord and Steam, the social media platforms where some of these videos are published, that the invasion is a good thing.

Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, disclosed in April that “the company’s security teams had identified recent Russian efforts “basically to penetrate some of these gaming communities,” citing examples in Minecraft and in Discord discussion groups. He said Microsoft had advised governments about them, which he did not name, but he played down their significance.” The New York Times

Joseph Brown, an assistant professor at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, has seen that Russia is using games and social media as propaganda. He said to The New York Times, “They need to get everybody back on board with the war. It’s another piece of this whole puzzle of constant propaganda, all the time. In every single medium, they can get to you with, they will get to you.” Explanation of evidence needed

Concluding statement to be added.
