The Russian hockey goalie who signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers was detained in Russia for avoiding military service, according to the Russian news. Youngsters in Russia have to serve in the military for at least one year.
His name is Ivan Fedotov, and he planned to compete for a spot at training camp in the fall after signing the contract with the Flyers in May. He played for the Russian team during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics Game and helped the team gain a silver medal.
A relative of the National League said that the league was aware of his intention, but the relative would not say anything more.
In a statement, Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations and general manager, Chuck Fetcher, said that the team is conscious of the news and they are still investigating the situation.
Fedotov, the Russian hockey player, was detained on Friday; the same day as the first trial of an American basketball idol, Brittney Griner.
Ms. Griner was detained by Russia in February for having vape cartridges that contained cannabis oil in her luggage. Many of her supporters said that Russia is using her as a bargaining chip against the U.S.
Fedotov, a 6 feet 7 goalie who was born in Finland and raised in Russia, used to be in the army and one of the best teams in K.H.L., Russia’s premier hockey league.
In his last year, he led his team to Gagarin Cup, the K.H.L.’s championship, and he was widely recognized as the best goalie in the league with a 2.00 goals against average.
“Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development,” according to Fletcher, Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations and general manager.
