On Sunday, July 23, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that three drones were fired by the Ukrainian government, signaling that few places are now off-limits after over 17 months of war.

The invasion of Ukraine started on 24 February 2022 and is still ongoing. It was predicted at first that Russia would take down Ukraine with ease. However, that’s not the case, not only has Russia failed to take down Ukraine, but Ukraine is managing to attack back to Russia.

The first drone was destroyed in Odintsovo, a city outside Moscow. The Defense Ministry stated that Russian air defenses intercepted two other drones, which led to the hitting of commercial buildings near the capital. Although there were no reported deaths or injuries, video footage from Russian state media showed blown-out windows and twisted beams in one of Moscow’s prominent skyscrapers. This building, located several miles from the Kremlin, is known for its tall modern structures and reportedly housed three Russian government ministries and residential apartments that were damaged.

In the past, other drones have managed to reach the Russian capital, though they have not caused significant damage. The recent news of the attack is unsettling for the Russian authorities, who have referred to their actions against Ukraine as a “special military operation.” Over the past months, there have been at least three drone attacks on Moscow, with two drones being headed toward the capital, one of which was brought down close to the defense ministry headquarters.

In response to the latest attack, the Ukrainian Air Force spokesman neither accepted nor denied responsibility. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the war was gradually returning to Russia’s territory, specifically its symbolic centers, considering it an inevitable, natural, and just process.

Following Zelenskiy’s statements, Russian officials reported that a Ukrainian drone had crashed much closer to the front lines, where Russia claimed to have shot down two drones the previous week. However, there were no immediate reports of injuries. On the other hand, in a town outside Taganrog, Russian officials claimed to have shot down a Ukrainian drone, resulting in at least nine people being injured. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday, July 23 that three drones were fired by the Ukrainian government. Russia is announcing that few places are off limits after more than 17 months of war.

The first drone was wrecked in a city outside Moscow, Odintsovo. The Defense Ministry added that after the Russian air defenses intercepted two other drones, they hit commercial buildings near the capital. Moscow’s Mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, posted on social media saying there were no deaths or injuries. However, blown-out windows and twisted beams in one of Moscow’s premier skyscrapers were shown in a video footage from Russian state media.

Several miles from the Kremlin, is known for its tall modern buildings. A Russian media reported that one of the buildings damaged was home to three Russian government ministries as well as residential apartments. A young woman, Liya, told reporters she was in an apartment she had rented with her friends. “At some point, we heard an explosion, and it was like a wave, everyone jumped,” she said. “And then there was a lot of smoke, and you couldn’t see anything. From above, you could see fire.”

Other drones from the past have managed to reach the Russian capital in recent months. Though they haven’t done major damage to Moscow, the recent news is discomforting for the Russian authorities. They described the action against Ukraine as a “special military operation” to the public. Aside from the latest attack, there have been at least three drone attacks on Moscow. Two drones were headed to the capital, one of which was brought down close to the headquarters of the defense ministry.

Just a few hours after the latest attack on Sunday morning’s strike, an Ukrainian Air Force spokesman expressed that they neither accepted nor denied the responsibility. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the war was “gradually returning to Russia’s territory – to its symbolic centers”, while also adding, “And this is an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process.”

Late Sunday, after Zelenskiy’s statements, Russian officials reported a Ukrainian drone had crashed much closer to the front lines, where Russia claimed to have shot down two drones last week. But there weren’t any immediate reports of injuries. However, a different story for a town outside Taganrog, where Russian officials claim they shot down a Ukrainian drone but at least nine people were injured.

“There’s always something flying in Russia, as well as in Moscow. Now the war is affecting those who were not concerned,” said Keir Giles, a Russia expert at Chatham House and the author of books on Russia’s invasion and foreign policy.
