In Southern Africa, a big pink diamond has been found. The big diamond was 170-carats (34 grams) and was thought to be the biggest discovery in 300 years. This extremely, extremely, extremely rare diamond was named after the mine it was found in, the “Lulo Rose.”
“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage,” Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s minister of mineral resources, claimed.
As pink diamonds are near the rank of 3rd place in rareness, a jewelry expert Joanna Hardy still thinks that a few private buyers will still want to own this gem. If someone does want to buy it, they couldn’t tell the price until the diamond is cut.
Similar diamonds have been sold for millions of dollars in the past, like the pink diamond known as “Pink Star.” Pink Star was on sale in Hong Kong at an auction in Hong Kong for $71.2m (£59m) in 2017.
Diamond are rare minerals that form deep in the Earth. The mantle forms diamonds when cool air and magma and carbon dioxide compresses together. When a volcanic eruption comes, the lava under pushes the magma up and carries the diamonds with it. When the lava comes out, it hardens and people can find diamonds in the rock.
Sometimes, diamonds can form when the Earths plates move. These diamonds are definitely something amazing.
