Philip Connors, a New Mexico fire watcher reports any sign of a forest fire to the dispatch office. He explains that “The essence of the job is to stay awake and look out the window and alert the dispatch office at the first sign of smoke.”

His normal perch place is in a small room on top of a 35-foot tower in the corner of the Gila National Forest, home to salamanders, deer, gophers, elk, tree frogs, black bears, and the Gila Trout species.

Philip Connors is an important figure in New Mexico. He is a fire watcher and has saved many trees from burning.

However, his world changed when more and more wildfires started popping up, and more and more trees started to burn. The biggest fire, known as the Black Fire, forced him to evacuate and he is not ashamed to admit that he did hug some trees on his way out of the area because he is very connected to them.
