On the evening of July 20th, Cann Group, a company that conducts legalized cannabis research, revealed its undisclosed location in Mildura, Australia, after its LED lights illuminated the sky pink, which left 56,000 town residents wondering about the origin of the sky’s pink glow.
Cann Group was the first company licensed to conduct marijuana research in Australia. After receiving a $1.4 million grant from Victoria’s state government, the company utilized a portion of the grant to build a commercial medical cannabis facility in an undisclosed location.
Daily, Cann Group uses blackout curtains to block out the red LED lights used to boost plant growth from the public. However, on July 20th, the curtains were accidentally left open, radiating light visible miles away from the facility located in the southeastern portion of Victoria.
Since 2016, Australia has legalized the growth, research, and manufacture of medical marijuana. According to Fresh Leaf Analytics, a cannabis market research company, approximately 70,000 Australians currently turn to medical marijuana, accumulating an estimated profit of $160 million in 2021.
Many were confused about where the mysterious glow was coming from. Resident Tammy Szumowski thought the world was going to end. “I was just like ‘What the hell is that?’ It is very bizarre, this huge pink light in the sky. I’m trying not to freak out because I’ve got my girls in the car.”
Anne Webster, a lawmaker of Australia’s Parliament, sought an explanation for the strange man-made phenomenon. “I was driving home, and it was dark, and I noticed a very unusual, quite large pink glow. I thought that is very strange. My first thought was there has to be a logical reason for this.”
Mildura is recognized for being a major grape producer and supplying wineries across the region; however, it’s now entering the field of cannabis production, and many believe that it is opening opportunities for residents. Webster, who has toured the Cann facility, said “It is providing jobs, and this is only the tip of the iceberg because it has quite a future for growth.”
Cann Group believes the incident is beneficial. Peter Crock, the chief executive of Cann Group told spoke out about the unexpected occurrence, saying, “We’ve resumed normal transmission, but it definitely caught everyone’s attention in the meantime,” adding, “Any publicity is good publicity.”
