Although mist and fog might seem like the same thing, they are quite different from each other, but have some similarities. For example, they both can affect what we see in front of us.
How does fog and mist form? Well, both are formed by the suspension of water droplets. When the ground cools down, the air goes near it. When the air cools down, condensation takes over. Condensation is when invisible water vapor changes into little water droplets. The droplets form a cloud, restricting what we can see.
Therefore fog and mist have their differences. For example, fog is used when microscopic droplets reduce horizontal visibility at the Earth’s surface to less than 1 km. Mist is used when the droplets do not reduce horizontal visibility to less than 1 km.
How can we stay safe in fog? Walking or traveling in light fog is not that risky. Heavy fog could be a bigger risk because you can’t see very far while traveling. For example, planes can be delayed by heavy fog. Boats could also have trouble seeing in the thick fog. That’s why we have lighthouses.
In conclusion, fog can be risky, or not. Still, people could still be in an accident if they are in the fog. Therefore, always be cautious while traveling in the fog.
