On Wednesday the chess championship announced that Magnus Carlsen, the top world chess champion, will skip the tournament. After the tournament, Carlsen will no longer be world champion. Someone else will take the crown next year after the chess tournament.
Although there is a possibility that the person who wins the chess championship games will now play against Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia. Ian Nepomniachtchi has won the candidates’ tournament earlier this month. Nepomniachtchi is also a prescribed challenger, and Ding Liren of China, who ended up as runner-up after the game, was also known as a severely diminished champion.
Arkady Dvorkovich, president of the International Chess Federation, said Magnus Carlsen was going to skip the games as he won five times.
“His decision not to defend the title is undoubtedly a disappointment for the fans and bad news for the spectacle,” Arkady said in statement, “It leaves a big void.”
In 1975, chess player Bobby Fischer was champion as he beat the match in 1972. That caught the world’s attention because the game was played in the time of the Cold War when they were declined to defend the crown. At the time, Fischer protracted negotiations with the federation but still could not come up with an agreement so he chose to quit rather than play.
Garry Kasparov was the world champion but was defeated by Vladimir Kramnik in 2000. Kasparov continued to play. He was known as champion before he was defeated.
Carlsen will continue to play and probably become champion within the next few years.
