Last Monday, Ohio police officers attempted to halt Jayland Walker over a traffic and equipment violation. Allegedly, Jayland slowed down and got out of the car to run, resulting in a foot chase that ended with his death.
In accordance with body camera laws instated by the state last year, body camera footage has been released publicly on Sunday. The video showed the graphic death of an running unarmed 25-year-old black man shot a multitude of times by multiple police officers.
Following the release of the footage, Bobby Dicello, attorney for Walker’s family, said that Jayland did not pose a threat to the officers. Dicello believed that the police officials wrongly shot Jayland as they could clearly see his hands were empty. It was reported later that Jayland suffered 60 gunshot related wounds.
The Police Officers that were on-site during the incident have released a statement to defend themselves; “actions by the suspect caused the officers to perceive he posed a deadly threat to them. In response to this threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.” Walker was allegedly seen to be reaching for a weapon to harm the officers leading to them open firing.
This incident has sparked nationwide outrage over police shootings. The public demands accountability and justice for Walker, and demand change as shooting incidents of innocent civilians especially in the black community are increasing.
Derrick Johnson, leader of the civil rights organization NAACP, commented on this incident: “Any officers who fire 90 rounds at a Black man, for an alleged traffic violation, should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law… This wasn’t self-defense, it wasn’t an accident in the heat of the moment, it was murder.”
