Over 80% of the ocean has not been explored. On July 23, scientists found something bizarre. There were holes, some of them nearly 1.6 miles deep. For now, scientists don’t know what or who made these holes. They could be impressions made by organisms, or maybe cracks from tectonic plates.

“These holes look manmade, but the tiny piles of sediment around them suggests that they were dug by… something,” said a Twitter post from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Exploration Project (NOAA for short). These holes are getting more and more common, especially in the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Could this be made by aliens? Or extraterrestrial life?

There will be three expeditions that will seek answers. NOAA is calling it Voyage to the Ridge 2022, which begins in May and ends in September. A submarine dubbed the Okeanos Explorer will investigate these holes, and hopefully, find out their origins.
