On Thursday, it was announced that Kahlo’s life story will be turned into a musical, despite the fact that there are already tons of content about Frida Kahlo. With the consent of Kahlo’s family in Mexico, the show’s creators want to present a more three-dimensional, more human image of the famous Mexican artist.

Following regional auditions next year, the show is anticipated to debut on Broadway in 2024. It will trace Kahlo’s life from Mexico City to Paris to New York and back to the fabled “Blue House,” where she was born and passed away in 1954.

The writers of the musical believe that the performance will provide a fresh perspective on her life by shedding light on previously-hidden facts and intimate tales about the adored artist. Although there have been numerous attempts to adapt Kahlo’s life into a musical, only this one has received approval from her family.

“I really connected to her humor,” Neena said. “I don’t think I knew how funny she was — that she had this wry, dry sense of humor. She really was of the people.”

Her life narrative has a dramatic element, for sure. During her rocky marriage to Diego Rivera, the artist had an affair with Russian-Ukrainian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. Kahlo often hid in the basement when Rivera got violent. She suffered spinal and pelvic injuries in a streetcar accident when she was 18 years old, which resulted in life-altering suffering. She died at the age of 47.

“She is such an inspiration, not only as an artist but also as a warrior,” the composer of the music said. “With everything she went through, she kept fighting, making her own art, telling her own story. As a Mexican, to be telling this story and bringing this authenticity to the show, I feel really honored,” Valentina Berger says.

So far, ten songs have been created for the musical. One song, “Wings,” expresses Kahlo’s determination — and even happiness — in the face of difficulties. It is inspired by a famous remark by Frida Kahlo about her chronic pain, which frequently caused her to stay in bed: “Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?”
