On June 18, 2023, five people exploring the Titanic’s Shipwreck on a submersible (small submarine that is controlled remotely) were announced dead on June 22 by U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger, after the U.S. Coast Guard found pieces of the submersible near the titanic site.
The expedition was going well but, around 90 minutes after the submersible went underwater, the craft lost contact with the support vessel. At that time they were about 700 kilometers south of St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The rescue attempts started the next day on June 19, and many different countries sent ships, aircrafts, and underwater equipment to help with the search. Then, on the 22, the U.S. Coast Guard found debris of the vehicle near the Titanic. The debris told them that there was an implosion of the vessel.
The five people on the submersible were Stockton Rush, who was actually the CEO of OceanGate, the company that was operating the submersible, Hamish Harding who was a British Billionaire, Paul-Henri Nargeolet who was a French explorer, and Shahzada Dawood who was a Pakistani businessman.
In a news conference on the afternoon of June 22, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) discovered a piece of the Titan. At the new conference many people asked how the expedition went wrong, and John Mauger responded that soon they will be conducting an investigation to find out.
