In his newly published book, We Want Them Infected, the author, New York University neurologist Jonathan Howard, rejects the solution that some scientists proposed to relieve the impact of COVID-19. Some scientists were pushing for a now-discredited solution, casting aside masks, school closings, and vaccines, to reach the conceptual idea of “herd immunity”, which has resulted in thousands of deaths. In his book, Howard tells a story of the failed quest for herd immunity and how it ended with thousands of American deaths.
Howard said, “It’s unbelievable that while doctors like myself were working to treat sick COVID patients, begging people to stay at home and be safe, there was another group of doctors working at cross-currents to us – prominent doctors wanting to purposely infect unvaccinated young people with the promise that herd immunity would arrive in a couple of months.”
Paul Alexander is an epidemiologist at the Health and Human Services Department who served during the Trump Administration. His idea was that many people would become infected with the virus and become immune as the immune system recognizes the virus. Herd immunity happens when so many people obtain natural immunity that the virus cannot spread further. “Infants, kids, teens, young adults, middle-aged with no conditions etc. have zero to little risk,” he said to Health and Human Services officials. “So we use them to develop herd… we want them infected.”
In other words, his proposal was to end lockdowns. His proposal was perfect for the Trump Administration, which was looking for ways to remedy economic dislocation caused by the pandemic. Unfortunately, his plan failed: the sickness and death toll mounted as he allowed the virus to spread among the “low-risk” groups, and the country never reached herd immunity.
As misaligned ideas about the pandemic spread, thousands of deaths came as a result, and the country would have been on the verge of a far more catastrophic public health disaster because supporters of a failed theory did not accept the truth of vaccines, masks, and lockdowns.
