On Wednesday, a Bob’s Burgers voice actor, Jay Johnston, was arrested in California for being involved in the infamous Capitol Riot.
The 54-year-old was arrested mainly for civil disorder, entering a restricted building, and felony obstruction to police officers during the Capitol riot. According to the F.B.I., evidence suggests Mr. Johnston was pushing officers while helping other rioters during the riot.
Mr. Johnston started to gain everyone’s attention when the F.B.I. released photos of the riot. Many people seemed to recognize Mr. Johnson in the photos as they had seen him appear in small roles in movies like “Anchorman” and other comedies. Some of his co-workers on the podcast Harmontown tweeted that they recognized Mr. Johnston too.
Cassandra Church, who worked with Mr. Johnston on the podcast Harmontown, said that while she was not a detective, she did know Jay. She added, “He said that he was there. And that’s him in the picture. So…” Her tweet was later deleted.
After this incident, three of Mr. Johnston’s associates confirmed that he was in the photos. One of them proved it by showing a text message sent by Mr. Johnston explaining that “the news presented it as an attack. It actually wasn’t. Thought it kind of turned into that. It was a mess. Got maced and tear gassed.”
There was also evidence of Mr. Johnston pouring water over the rioters’ eyes after they got sprayed. Not only did he help the other rioters, but he also stole a shield from a Capitol Police to join a group assault on officers guarding a tunnel entryway to the building.
Because of these current events, Fox banned Mr. Johnston from voicing Jimmy Pesto Sr. for the Fox show Bob’s Burgers because of the riot.
According to the Justice Department, “More than 1,040 people have been charged in connection with the attack on the Capitol, and Prosecutors have indicated that there could be as many as another 1,000 people who might eventually face charges.” Many well-known people have also been charged, including Peter G. Moloney, Richard Barnett, Stewart Rhodes, Jay Johnston, and others.
Maybe the next time you go to an event, think about the consequences of it because it might affect your job, just like Mr. Johnston.
