Minecraft’s Copper Update: New Additions
The latest Minecraft update brings more exciting new uses for copper, making it more valuable, and versatile.
You are now able to craft tools, weapons, and armor from copper. Previously, copper was only briefly used in the game, and could only be used to craft a few items. Prior to when copper was added there are only 6 materials for tools, weapons, and armor; wood, gold, stone, iron, diamond, and netherite.
Copper items can be placed between stone and iron in terms of material efficiency. Copper armor is a good early-game option, while copper tools offer better speed and durability than their stone counterparts and is another viable option for stronger materials before finding iron.
The copper update also includes a mob called the Copper Golem. This new mob acts as an item sorter. In Minecraft, players often struggle with the organization of items into chests or storage units. Now with this mob, players have access to an early-game sorting system that is more convenient than building large mechanical systems. By placing items into a special copper chest, the golem will automatically collect them and sort them into other chests in your base. These golems can be crafted by placing a carved pumpkin over a copper block.
The golem itself, like copper blocks, goes through oxidation over time, developing a greenish color, which can be prevented or reversed using honeycomb or an axe, which will reduce the axe’s durability over time. If you decide to attack a Copper golem, they will not retaliate, as they are a passive mob and don’t engage in combat.
The update also includes new decorative copper blocks. These new blocks also go through oxidation, which can cause the function of some copper blocks to deteriorate. Some main blocks are Chiseled Copper, Copper Grates, and Copper Bulbs, (different textured blocks and lights) offering more aesthetic options for builders. Copper doors and trapdoors (textured interactive blocks) are also included.
As one player on the Hypixel Forums states, “It seems as though this will be a very good edition to the game! But it gets better, as Mojang are also adding the copper golem!”
For builders, GPORTAL explains that copper provides “a sense of age and history” to structures in the game. However some players feel these items are not needed in early-game play, “Do you really need copper items to bridge this gap? Why not swap your stone gear for iron, like the good old days?” asks one reviewer.
This update expands the use of copper beyond just lightning rods, spyglasses, and brushes. By introducing a new equipment tier, an item-sorting mob, and distinct building blocks, this new update aims to help player progression, organization, and creative potential within the Minecraft world.
