Record-Breaking 1000 Earthquakes Within Two Weeks in Japan
Since June 21, 2025, scientists claim over 1000 earthquakes in a short period of 2 weeks have devastated Japan. Countless Japanese citizens are greatly terrified for their future while many individuals outside the country are considering to not visit.
These quakes included a high magnitude of 5.5 and severely spooked many Japanese citizens. The Tokara Islands, a remote and minimally-populated area in Kyushu, have been reported to cause longer shaking after the main tremor, ruining the residents’ sleep while raising fears of a more severe quake. In addition, the CNN claims, “[that quake], strong enough to make standing difficult, was one of more than 1,000 tremors in the islands of Kagoshima.”
Local authorities have furthermore urged residents in Akusekijima to evacuate the island as a safety precaution and began on July 4, 2025 with temporary places to stay in Kagoshima city on the mainland. Mayor Kubo Genichiro of Toshima Village had reported that the first departing group will take a ferry from Naze Port to Kagoshima port.
Overall, Japan experiences around 1500 earthquakes per year and ranks third among countries with the most earthquakes per year in 2025.These earthquakes in Japan are caused by the tremors of the ground caused by a sudden movement on a fault (a crack in the Earth’s crust). As the constantly-moving plates rub, stress builds up, and when the stress is too great for the rocks, the fault suddenly slips.
However, Japan is relatively one of the countries in the world who experience the most earthquakes. The “Ring of Fire,” which encircles the Pacific Ocean, stretches through the Himalayas and Mediterranean, and surrounds an underwater mountain range. This region, shaped like a horseshoe, experiences intense interaction between plates and earthquakes.
Approximately 90% of the world’s earthquakes and 75% of its active volcanoes occur within the “Ring of Fire.”
Thus, residents in Japan will likely have several major earthquakes in the near future.
