While examining the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, a largely unexplored place, scientists have a pattern of holes on the sandy ocean floor. Only three weeks later, more of these mysterious holes were seen. There is no solid evidence to explain why they are there.

Not knowing exactly what the holes are, scientists are now stumped about what made them occur in the first place. The holes are evenly spaced a minimum of four inches apart, and the pattern extends from five to even six feet across the ocean floor.

20 years ago, similar holes were also spotted on the ocean ground, around 27 miles from the current sightings, says Emily Crum, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) spokeswoman. But even after two decades, clear answers about the mystery of the holes still have not been found.

NOAA experts have now launched three expeditions they call the Voyage to the Ridge 2022. The origin of these holes are but one of the scientists’ lingering questions.

“There is something important going on there and we don’t know what it is,” Dr. Mike Vecchione, a former researcher at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway said. “This highlights the fact that there are still mysteries out there.”
