18 years ago, in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, holes were found on a dive. Patterned holes were in the sand. as they explored the large unexplored place. Later on, they did another dive, finding the same holes along a volcanic ridge. This happened in even more recent times when people did a dive in Azores, near Portugal mainland, where they found dozens of holes that looked like a track of lines at 1.6 miles deep. This happened many more times near the same area.

Scientists don’t know what they are, but they have a thought that they are “life traces” meaning that sediments could be the work of living things. The question that is puzzling everyone is, “What is creating those marks, with the holes spaced 4 or more inches apart and the lines extending from 5 feet to more than 6 feet, on the ocean floor?” They also don’t know the origin of these holes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Exploration said that these holes look human-made, but the sediment around it makes it seem like something had been burrowing it. This was confusing for all scientists as well.

However, nearly 2 decades ago, 27 miles from Azores (the current expedition spot) scientists spotted similar holes. It turns out that holes aren’t the only thing that scientists are trying to find an answer for. Now the experts with the NOAA are going to seek out answers at their next expedition this year.
