The competition between defending Texas governor Greg Abbott of the Republican party and Beto O’Rourke of the Democratic party has proven to be both expensive and nail biting, with both candidates neck and neck.
Many approaches and issues have influenced Texans’ votes. Gun laws and recent events are the largest factors.
A mother from Texas claims that in the past “Texas believes in its guns.” Mr Abbott’s strategist, Mr. Carney, even said “[b]elieve me, [Mr O’Rourke] liked to talk and it’s all on video and it’s all contrary to what are the values and what the vast majority of Texans believe.” In this statement, the value he is referring to is gun control. His deduction of Texans’ ideals come from the 2020 election, where Mr. O’Rourke ran an unsuccessful campaign with gun control as a high priority, a stand-out idea.
However, with many recent school shootings, some of which killed tens of people, the general idea has changed. After a shooting at Walmart, Mr. O’Rourke blamed Mr. Abbott, claiming “[t]his is on you.” After this, he vowed to ban AR-15 rifles. This promise thrilled the public with civilians at a march cheering “vote them out!” The spokesman for one of Mr. O’Rourke campaigns said, “[p]eople are not happy with the direction the state is going and we’re going right to them and offering them the alternative.” In the statement, the spokesman highlights the changing views of Texans.
Noticing the early success of their campaign, Mr. O’Rourke became increasingly active in Texas events with 70 public events in a single tour. In the end, “[f]rom April to July, the race changed 5 points” in favor of O’Rourke, leading to him being under five percentage points from governor.
With all of this, Mr. O’Rourke is making three times as much from donations below $200. Still, Mr. O’Rourke still has fewer financial resources. Mr. Abbott has nearly twice as much total money at 46 million dollars to Mr. O’Rourke’s 24 million. This is due to Mr. Abbott getting 62 donations of $100,00 or more while Mr. O’Rourke only got 6. So far, Mr. Abbott and his team have already decided to commit $20 million for advertisements in the fall targeting 10% of voters. It is also predicted Mr. Abbott will gain the votes of most Hispanics. Currently, it is too early to know the victor. However, all signs point to a battle fought on a razor’s edge.
