On Thursday, July 21, 2022, Frida Kahlo’s family, producer Valentina Berger, and BTF media announced that Kahlo’s life story will be featured in the 2024 Broadway show, “Frida, The Musical.” The show will consist of lyrics by playwright Neena Beber and music composed by Jaime Lozano.

Kahlo was a 20th-century painter born and raised in Mexico City. Her creative, captivating paintings caused virtual immersive museum experiences like “Mexican Geniuses” and a biopic called “Frida” to feature her famous artwork.

However, Kahlo’s life was nowhere near perfect. At 18 years old, she experienced a catastrophic car accident that chronically and permanently damaged her spine and pelvis. Before her early death in 1954 at the age of 47, she often painted on her bed and visually expressed the pain she felt through her renowned self-portraits.

Regarding Kahlo’s life, Berger remarked, “Everyone knows a colder Frida, a suffering Frida, but she loved life. She was fun.” Berger said this while planning to portray Kahlo as accurately and authentically as possible in the Broadway show.

Supporting Berger’s description, Kahlo was known for masking her struggles with persistence and happiness. She once playfully and joyously questioned while experiencing severe pain, “Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?” Depicted in Kahlo’s famous artwork, her strength in turbulent times led to her fame and success.

While there have been other attempts to apply Kahlo’s life story into a musical, this is the only one her family has approved. The plot details of “Frida, The Musical” will be designed using Isolda P. Kahlo’s book “Intimate Frida” and conversations with Kahlo’s family in Mexico.

While planning the Broadway show, Berger visited Kahlo’s family to learn more about the show’s star. Kahlo’s universal heiress, Mara Romeo Kahlo, described her fond memories of her aunt, “In all the stories I heard when I was a little child, our family remembered Aunt Frida as a very joyful woman. She was passionate about music, arts, and Mexican culture.” These words were from a statement addressed to The Washington Post.

Regarding the Broadway show, later in the statement, Mara Kahlo praised, “‘Frida, The Musical’ honors everything she was: a real woman who fought for her dreams, loved like anybody else, and always lived ahead of her time.” These insights from Kahlo’s family gave Berger lots of helpful information to create a Broadway blockbuster about the iconic painter for 2024.
