TikTokers are using calamine lotion for their videos because they say it is “a beauty hack” and it gets rid of acne and scars.

People usually use this type of lotion with a sponge or a brush while only applying slight dabs to acne or scars. But in recent days these TikTokers don’t mind smearing this lotion on their face before applying makeup. “I cannot see my pores anywhere,” one TikToker said after using the lotion, she approves the quality and how it doesn’t wear off.

This type of lotion is getting these TikTokers millions of views, from using hashtags to the new discovery of it. But in recent studies dermatologists and makeup experts have proven that putting on too much of this kind of lotion for long periods of time can cause fatal skin conditions and lead to long term damage. “It just doesn’t make sense to use calamine lotion and risk drying out the skin and damaging the skin barrier,” Azadeh Shirazi, a dermatologist practicing in the San Diego area to The Washington Post.

Experts that created the lotion said that the lotion works and can be used to shrink acne and marks. But the American Academy of Dermatology noted that if not used correctly the lotion can cause skin irritation and conditions. Shirazi said, “Calamine lotion is made up of zinc oxide, ferric oxide and phenol. Zinc oxide is an astringent that can help absorb excess oil and have a mattifying effect.”

Makeup experts are starting to agree with Shirazi, they said that primer makeup will help with stabilizing makeup and should be used but using this lotion can cause a drying effect. Experts also recommend not to use this lotion everyday which if you do it will cause wrinkles over time.

When people use this lotion, they will experience different results depending on your skin type and sensitivity. “Much like anything else related to skin care, the potential risks depend on your skin type so it’s best to always check with your dermatologist first,” Shirazi said.

Don’t try to overuse something that is not necessary, follow the instructions and use as told or else it will lead to disease and different kinds of conditions. Listen to the experts, they know what’s best for you and the user.
