Sonny Barger, bully, rule-breaker, and the godfather of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, died
on June 27th at his home, Livermore, Calif at the age of 83 due to liver cancer.
Sonny Barger was not the good guy people imagine any famous person to be. Crime and
violence are woven into the tradition of the club he founded, Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.
Sonny Barger has killed members of rival clubs, done drugs, and committed other illegal acts.
Barger’s response to these actions was, “Discover your limits by exceeding them,”
Sonny Barger was a troublemaker from a very young age. Both of the times his father married
somebody, the spouses ran off because of his father. Sonny Barger never liked school. He said, “I never liked being told what to do.” He often was suspended for mouthing off and even
sometimes occasionally hitting his teacher.
When he came under the care of his grandma, who was really strict, he was not happy. He
smoked marijuana for the first time at the age of 14 and dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to join the Army with a forged birth certificate.
After some months, the military authorities discovered the forged certificate and kicked him out of the army.
Barger went from job to job but didn’t find any interest in them. He said, “I couldn’t get a
grip on this nine-to-five working stuff.”
He decided to make a club of his own. Over the decade, this single club began to turn into a
financially stable network.
Barger later published two novels, “Dead in 5 Heartbeats” (2003) and “6 Chambers, 1 Bullet”
(2006), showing the murder and chaos of the biker’s world.
Barger may have committed many horrendous acts, but he had some bright sides too. He
showed people around the world what it was like to live a different and unusual way. He also
showed that people can live a financially stable life by doing what they like. When things don’t
get any better on their own, try to take your future into your own hands.
