Thirty-year-old Heather Watson’s journey throughout the competition at Wimbledon was ended by the German Julie Niemier. Watson is a talented tennis player that ranks in the 100 over the world. In 2015, she went against Selena Gomez and nearly won! This was quite the disappointment for Watson as she hoped and believed that she would make it. Watson stated that “I’ve always felt good enough. I’ve won four WTA titles. That’s not easy. I know when I light it up, I can play really well and beat anyone on my day, just like anyone on tour.”
Her journey was filled with emotion from start to finish. In her first match, she managed to get the opening victory, which she failed to do last year. Her first two matches took two days due to late finishes. However, she stood her ground against Kaja Juvan and secured her 3rd match with a victory. This led her to her first singles fourth round in 7 years against Niemier.
Watson felt like she was playing a “servebot” when facing Niemier. She managed to win the first set but Watson took the second. Luckily for Watson, Niemier missed a shot which gave the round to her. In the third round, Niemier managed to stay comfortable as Watson made two double faults, which led to her taking the victory. This was the end of Watson’s journey in the 2022 Wimbledon competition, but it was a thrilling one nonetheless.
