On Saturday, Nick Kyrgios, no. 40, won an intense match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, no. 5, ending with a score of 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7). After the game, Kyrgios complained about the umpire and referees “for not defaulting Tsitsipas after he angrily sent a ball into the crowd, coming dangerously close to directly hitting a fan on the fly.”

Tsitsipas retaliated by stating that he was the only person who was “interested in playing tennis”, and that Kyrgios was turning it into a circus. During the game, he even started trying to hit Kyrgios with his hits. The news conferences afterwards were even worse, where it turned into a “name-called, insult-filled debate over decorum and who had more friends in the locker room.”

Tsitsipas, who has mentioned that he believes Kyrgios intentionally “made a mess of the match”, said, “It’s constant bullying, that’s what he does. He bullies the opponents. He was probably a bully at school himself. I don’t like bullies. I don’t like people that put other people down. He has some good traits in his character, as well. But when he — he also has a very evil side to him, which if it’s exposed, it can really do a lot of harm and bad to the people around him.”

Tsitsipas also said that while he was regretful that he shot a ball into the crowd, but he wasn’t as apologetic that about the ball he hit into the scoreboard. He said that he was aiming for Kyrgios and missed, adding that he felt that he was disrespected, and he was “do[ing] something about it”.

Kyrgios responded to this by saying, “He was the one hitting balls at me. He was the one that hit a spectator. He was the one that smacked it out of the stadium.” Kyrgios also states that if Tsitsipas could be so affected by what he did today, then “that’s what’s holding him back”.
