Cornelia Parker is an artist that portrays her pieces of art through destruction. Inside the

explosions and snake venoms of her work, there hides a deeper meaning of philosophy and

much more. I would rate Cornelia Parker a 4 out of 5 stars for her new way of creating her art,

but to me, as a whole, the pieces look extremely boring and are not pleasing to the eye.

Cornelia Parker started destroying objects at a very young age. Smashing pennies by making

trains run onto them was the beginning of Cornelia Parker’s career. Through using this new

technique of creating art, Parker distinguished herself from other ordinary artists while also

doing what she loves to do.

Although her pieces may just seem like random acts of destruction, her arts utilize

interpretations and references from prior history. Parker’s different ways of expressing the

same message is something that I like about her. Not everybody can stand out if they all do the same thing. Parker uses her childhood strengths to her advantage but adds deeper meaning to her works later. As Parker said, “Everything just sort of weaves together.,” Because of the creativity, Parker brings to her works, she deserves a higher rating than other ordinary artists.

Usually, I found pieces of art rather boring, but with Parker bringing more action and meaning to her works, my opinions have changed. One of Parker’s works, Perpetual Canon (2004), had 60 crushed tubas, trumpets, coronets, and a hulking sousaphone molded into thin shapes. Though these might be normal shapes, there is a deeper meaning in the symbolism of the instruments.

“I quite liked the instruments becoming shadows because it means the audience is between the shadow and the objects. You can’t tell the objects are squished in the shadows. It’s like a ghost band, as it were. The idea of a Perpetual Canon just keeps going on forever. It’s like these wind instruments have inhaled and never exhaled. Like they’ve just taken a breath and are in an arrested space.”, said Parker, explaining the meaning of this piece of art. Parker’s ability to use symbolism in her works is something that I like because it brings more interaction between the viewer and the piece of art.

However, I don’t like that Parker’s pieces aren’t very interesting when it comes to their physical details. Unlike paintings or sculptures, Parker’s arts are more like simple objects that

foreshadow another message. An example of this is the Thirty Pieces of Silver, another art piece Parker made. Though it has an interesting meaning behind it, the physical aspect of it simply looks boring. An average person would much rather look at the Mona Lisa or other famous paintings than Parker’s art. I would too if I didn’t know there were deeper references in the arts.

Cornelia Parker is an interesting artist that has skills no other artists have. She brings inspiring

meaning and messages with a “boom” as she uniquely creates her works of art. I would

recommend Cornelia Parker to anybody that like to deeply interpret pieces of art and their

symbolism or hidden meaning.
