Last Wednesday, the Colorado Avalanche beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in overtime in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup. They now have a chance of winning their first Stanley Cup in over two decades.
The game was close from the start, with the Lightning scoring a point in periods 1 and 2 and the Avalanche scoring a point in periods 2 and 3, leaving both teams with two points at the start of overtime. It ended with Nazem Kadri from the Avalanche shooting the puck and hitting the net at its back bar. At first, it looked like the puck never hit the net, but after a replay, the Avalanche’s victory was confirmed.
At this point, the Avalanche has won 15 out of the 18 playoff games they’ve played, demolishing Nashville, St. Louis, and Edmonton by taking the first and third rounds. They’ve now beat the Lightning three times, two of them being overtime. With one more win, they can win the Stanley Cup, with a possible place of victory being in Denver, where they’ve accumulated a score of 11-3 against the Lightning in Games 1 and 2.
Star center Nathan MacKinnon of Colorado talked about the Lightning having to play in Denver, saying, “Obviously, they’re probably preaching, they’ve never been here; they’re going to be tight, and that’s fair, but we’ll be ready to go. We’ve been great under pressure all playoffs, all season.”
The loss was devastating to the Lightning, as they lost in overtime at home on a goal they thought was invalid. Tampa Bay Coach Jon Cooper said the loss, “is going to sting much more than others. You’re going to see what I mean when you see the winning goal. And my heart breaks for the players. Because we probably still should be playing.”
The Colorado Avalanche hadn’t played for the Stanley Cup since 2001, when Joe Sakic, now the general manager of the Avalanche, scored the winning goal against the Devils in Game 7. Kadri had also just come back after three weeks from surgery to repair his right thumb.
Fans are now wondering if the Tampa Bay Lightning can make a comeback after this defeat.
