Just a few hours after the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade on June 24th, hundreds of thousands of requests for appointments to obtain abortion pills came to organizations.

Roe v. Wade is a case from several decades ago, even though it was just overturned. It protected a pregnant woman’s rights to have an abortion. “When people say we’re going back to the days before Roe, there’s no such thing as a time machine — we have a very different pharmaceutical landscape,” said Katie Watson, a scholar and medical ethicist says.

Since it has been overturned, people are turning to abortion pills. Abortion pills are medicines that pregnant women can take within the first ten weeks of their pregnancy to induce abortion. Many patients choose the pills as they are less expensive and more convenient than other options. The pills can be mailed or taken home after consulting with a doctor.

Abortion pills are getting harder to obtain, especially for states that forbid abortion. It is harder for the police to track and shut down abortion pills being delivered than it is for them to close abortion clinics.

In 2000, abortion pills became legal in the United States. The F.D.A. approved of the drug but set up a lot of restrictions that are still in place today. “Today, the Supreme Court said abortion, it can only be regulated in sort of a health and safety way when it’s permitted, but it can be completely banned,” Watson, a professor, said.

As patients look for ways to obtain the pills, some are expected to turn to international websites, further complicating enforcement efforts.
