In November 2020, the death of a legendary Argentinian soccer player, Diego Maradona, shocked the world because he died at 60 of a heart attack while recovering from brain surgery. Recently, a judge ordered a homicide trial for eight of Maradona’s medical staff members.

About a year after Maradona’s death, a panel of twenty experts examined his death with permission. The panel found that Maradona’s medical team acted recklessly and inappropriately. Furthermore, the panel concluded that he “… would have had a better chance of survival [with better and more proper medical treatment].”

Upon hearing these comments from the panel, the judge ordered the homicide trial in June 2022. Thus far, there has not been a confirmed date for it.

According to George Wright, a journalist from BBC News, “Among those facing charges are Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, a psychiatrist and psychologist, two doctors, two nurses, and their boss.” The potential consequences of this trial are significant as well. In Argentina, homicide can lead to prison sentences between eight and 25 years.

As expected, these eight members of Maradona’s medical team have all denied responsibility for his death. In an interview about Maradona’s death, Dr. Leopoldo Luque, Maradona’s personal doctor, expressed his opinion, “You want to know what I am responsible for? For having loved him, for having taken care of him, for having extended his life, for having improved it to the end.”

In stark contrast, Maradona’s children and their lawyers disagree with Dr. Luque. Maradona’s daughters raised concerns about the poor medical treatment offered to their father after his brain surgery.

Mario Baudry, a lawyer of one of Maradona’s children, described him before his death as “in a situation of helplessness.” Additionally, he remarked, “As soon as I saw the cause, I said it was [a] homicide. I fought for a long time and here we are, with this stage completed.”

Maradona was one of the greatest soccer players of all time. He won the 1986 World Cup as the captain of the Argentinian National Team. If illegal medical practices were the hidden cause of this legendary soccer player’s death, his physicians and their boss could face up to 25 years in prison.
