Recently in London, WHO (the World’s Health Organization) advised that babies shouldn’t get any screen time at all and kids under five should only get one-hour maximum. WHO says that the reason kids shouldn’t spend too much time on digital devices is because physical activity and sleep is important for a kid’s health. Screen time will cause kids to have less physical activity because they would be sitting down and looking at the screen instead of getting up and doing something. Children ages 3 to 5 need to be active for at least 3 hours every day, and physical inactivity can lead to obesity or death.

However, Andrew Przybylski says otherwise. WHO’s screen time advice “overly focuses on quantity of screen time and fails to consider the content and context of use,” said Andrew Przybylski. He says that children can learn things from digital media by watching educational videos and playing educational games, and not all screen time is harmful. “Our research has shown that currently there is not strong enough evidence to support the setting of screen time limits,” said Dr. Max Davie, the college’s officer for health improvement. “The restricted screen time limits suggested by WHO do not seem proportionate to the potential harm,” he said.
