On June 13th, 2023, at a court in Miami, Florida, former president, Donald Trump pleaded not guilty for the 37 charges of which he was convicted. These charges are mostly about Trump mishandling classified government documents, many of which were found in his house.

This is the second time this year that Trump has been accused of criminal charges, however, this time the charges were much more serious. If the court had found him guilty, then he might have had to stay in prison for multiple years. Some charges could send him to prison for 20 years!

According to CBC Kids News, “Paul Quirk, an expert in U.S. politics who teaches at the University of British Columbia, said the charges brought against Trump are a lot more serious than the first case brought against him.”

However, even if Trump had been announced as guilty, he still may have been able to run for President. According to CBC Kids News, “Experts say it’s possible he could still become President even if he’s convicted.”

Trump took hundreds of top secret government documents to his home after he lost the 2020 election. These documents were important because they included plans for defense systems, such as nuclear programs.

A CBC Kids News article explains, “They included material on nuclear programs, defense and weapons capabilities of the U.S. and foreign governments and a Pentagon ‘attack plan.’”

If these documents were exposed to different countries, the United States could be put at risk. Paul Quirk says, “Those documents have some of the most important secrets that the United States has.” According to CBC Kids News, he also explains, “If information about nuclear weapons, for example, got out, it could put the safety of Americans at serious risk.”

In CBC Kids News, “Quirk agreed that the case against Trump is ‘overwhelmingly strong.’”
