On July 21, 2023, two of the most anticipated movies of summer 2023, “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig and “Oppenheimer” directed by Christopher Nolan, hit theaters all across the world, attracting huge audiences and booming box office sales.
However, both movies having the same release date doesn’t mean they are similar. The movie “Barbie” shows a more happy and exciting theme than the historic and suspenseful “Oppenheimer”. Barbie is rated PG-13, while Oppenheimer is rated R.
In the movie “Barbie,” the story starts with a beautiful pink paradise full of talking, walking, real life sized Barbie dolls. The movie contains many groups and uniqueness based on race, gender, and profession. For example, Issa Rae is president Barbie, Hari Nef plays Doctor Barbie, and Margot Robbie is our amazing main character.
A very unique part of the movie “Barbie” is that every girl calls each other Barbie and every boy calls each other “Ken”.
As the plot continues, Barbie finds herself in a bad situation, having strange thoughts and feelings. Barbie ultimately learns more about herself in traveling to the real world with Ken.
Gerwig, the Director of “Barbie,” has set an amazing, adventurous, and funny atmosphere for her audience. She has brought the energy she used in her earlier movies such as “Lady Bird” to us once again.
On the other hand, the movie “Oppenheimer,” is based on a more real-world event than the fictional “Barbie”.
As Christopher Nolan unfolded the story, he carefully chose his plots, characters, and perspectives, just like Gerwig did in the “Barbie,” movie. However, Oppenheimer has us baffled with quantum physics floating in our heads and the sound/picture of the nuclear bomb exploding into a mushroom.
The story starts with the smart and obvious main character, Oppenheimer, being hired by Leslie Groves for a project about atomic bombs.
Even though the characters and plot can be hard to understand for some audiences, the main idea is simple. Oppenheimer makes a nuclear bomb, and in the 1954 hearings, Former Atomic Energy Commission Chair Lewis Strauss attempts to throw Oppenheimer off his security clearance and make him a pariah. After the war, Oppenheimer starts to speak out for anti-nuclear proliferation.
In the end, when we take a look at the statistics, Barbie’s box office status is way higher than Oppenheimer’s. However, since Oppenheimer is rated R, its box office stats are already very impressive. According to the Rotten Tomatoes, “Oppenheimer has 94% rotten tomatoes” and “Barbie has 90% rotten tomatoes.” Even though both movies express a different type of energy and atmosphere, they both are equally weighted; the choice between this nuke or a pink castle really just depends and varies among people’s opinions and thoughts.
