North Korea is still allied with Russia and China, just like during the Korean war.

This week, North Korea opened its borders for visitors. They didn’t open it for any visitors though – only for China and Russia. The message of this opening is that Pyongyang has friends in Beijing and Moscow, despite the efforts of Washington to isolate the three.

On Friday, photos were released by North Korea depicting Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, with Sergei Shoigu, a Russian Defense Minister, and Li Hongzhong, a Chinese Politburo member. The trio was depicted watching a huge military parade marking the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice agreement.

Shoigu, who was overseeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, was the first Russian defense minister to visit North Korea since the end of the Soviet Union. Now, it is obvious that Pyongyang has allies in Beijing and Moscow despite differences in wealth and technology. After three years of strict border control, North Korea is slowly opening up. This is already very progressive for a hermit country like North Korea.

During the parade, North Korea showed off their new drones and short-range missiles that are designed to carry nuclear warheads. Earlier the same week, Kim showed Shoigu a defense exhibition featuring ballistic missiles that are banned under the U.N. Security Council resolutions. Currently, China and Russia are trying to delay the U.N. council’s efforts to punish North Korea.

“China and Russia are special partners for North Korea at this moment. In effect, China and Russia are sort of enablers for North Korea to go ahead with the nuclear and missile program […] That’s very much worrisome and frustrating.”, said Wi Sung-lac, a former South Korean ambassador to Russia. He is concerned about this alliance between current and former communist nations and that they might brew up a world conflict, such as what Russia has done by attacking Ukraine.

On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with an armistice agreement. But technically, the two Koreas at war because there was never an official peace treaty. According to North Korea’s side, it was the victim of South Korean and American aggression, and victor of the war. North Korea celebrates this anniversary as “Victory Day,” while South Korea marks the beginning of its security alliance with the United States.
