Travelers need to be especially careful nowadays on trips because of pickpockets. Pickpocketing is a common crime now in many countries around the world. Luckily, there are watchdogs to help tourists navigate these thieves. In this article, I will describe the common advice provided.

57-year-old Monica Poli, a watchdog from Venice, spends a lot of time preventing crime, and she specializes in finding pickpockets who try to steal from unsuspecting tourists. She coined the popular phrase, “Attenzione, Pickpocket!!!!!”

The first step in preventing being pickpocketed is understanding who to suspect. Many pregnant women will pickpocket because, even if they get caught, their penalties are reduced when compared to their male counterparts. Pickpockets also like to hang out in crowded areas, so tourists should always be aware of their surroundings. Pickpockets are known for working in groups. That way, one can distract the tourists, whether that’s by bumping into them, dropping items in front of their walkways, or spilling food, while the other(s) sneaks into their pockets.

Victims of pickpockets are mostly unsuspecting tourists who are not paying attention. Pickpockets take advantage of them by trailing them closely, waiting for a moment of distraction, and then snatching their belongings from their bag or pockets.

Travelers can take some preventative measures, such as getting bags that can zip up and keeping their baggage in front of them. It is important to always have your belongings in eyesight unless you have a designated “safe place.” The definition of a “safe place” is a place that you can either see or is in a 100% safe position, like if it’s with someone you trust or somewhere only you can access.

This advice comes from the watchdogs that spend their careers studying and stopping pickpocketing. With this new information, be careful and be safe on your next vacation!
