For the first time since the pandemic, North Korea has had visitors from both China and Russia, despite efforts from the U.S. to separate the three countries.
Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un, accompanied by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chinese Politburo member Li Hongzhong, watched a military parade about the 70th university of the Korean War armistice agreement.
In recent years, Beijing and Moscow have both delayed council efforts to punish North Korea after repeated tests of banned ballistic missiles.
This week at the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s daily press, Mao Ning claims that the two countries have a history of good exchanges. Wang Yajun, China’s ambassador for North Korea also attended the 70th anniversary banquet. Both countries seem to have a very close relationship with North Korea.
On the other hand, North Korea and South Korea are technically still at war despite the armistice agreement, because there was never a peace treaty. North Korea claims that it won the war and was the victim. North Korea claims the day as “Victory Day.” While South Korea commemorates the day as the beginning of an alliance with the U.S.
The Soviet Union had supported leader Kim Il Sung’s invasion of the pro-American South in 1950. China had fought with North Korea during war.
Pyongyang, which is the capital of North Korea, is a supporter of Moscow, being one of only five countries that declined to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. U.S. officials also say that Russia is buying rockets from North Korea, however, North Korea denies this claim.
In response to North Korea, China, and Russia’s growing friendliness, the United States, Japan and South Korea are increasing their security cooperation. Leaders of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea are going to hold their very first summit next month.
Wi Sung-Lac, former South Korean ambassador for Russia, said, as reported by BLANK, “In effect, China and Russia are sort of enablers for North Korea to go ahead with the nuclear and missile program. … That’s very much worrisome and frustrating.”
It is very possible that things may escalate further very soon. However, we must wait and see if this action will cause further conflict between the countries.
