Cruise tries to keep everything as real as possible. He encouraged his co-stars to bear G-force speeds until they threw up for Top Gun: Maverick. Mission: Impossible yielded five sequels that seem to get better and better as they go on. But to entertain us, “Cruise will happily climb the world’s tallest building, hold his breath for six and a half minutes, or jump out of an airplane with the cameraman.” And sure, it might be cheaper if it was done in front of a green screen, but when it comes to Cruise, he cares too much. Cruise tries to maintain traditional cinematic experiences themselves and feels every bit as big as an image. His efforts seem to have extremely effective results.
