Last Thursday, Donald Trump spoke lightly about hosting the contentious circuit at his golf club in New Jersey before teeing off in the LIV Golf Invitational Series pro-am. Donald J. Trump referred to the tournament’s Saudi Arabian sponsors as friends while criticizing the traditional PGA Tour.

“I’ve known these people for a long time in Saudi Arabia and they have been friends of mine for a long time,” Trump stated after practicing his swing on the driving range. “They’ve invested in many American companies. They own big percentages of many, many American companies and frankly, what they are doing for golf is so great, what they are doing for the players is so great. The salaries are going to go way up.”

The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which is run by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is mostly responsible for funding the LIV Tour. The tournament has drawn a lot of criticism over bin Salman’s role in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi of the Washington Post, and the Saudi regime’s potential connection to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Trump gave a brief interview before he started to golf. When questioned about the concerns brought up by the family members of people who died on 9/11, who will hold a protest and press conference on Friday, Trump completely avoided the subject, dismissing connections between a Saudi spy and two of the attackers.

“Well, nobody’s gotten to the bottom of 9/11, unfortunately,” Trump said. “They should have. As to the maniacs that did that horrible thing to our city, to our country, to the world, so nobody’s really been there.”

The amount Trump was paid by LIV Golf organizers to utilize his club for the third event of the tour is unknown.

Trump played with professional golfers Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, his son, Eric Trump, and Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.
