Former Number 1 tennis player, Serena Williams stated on June 25th in the interview room that she would return to Wimbledon after a tournament-ending injury, looking to win. Though
returning to Wimbledon is exciting, she has faced many questions about the current politics.
Serena Williams has finally returned to Wimbledon, one of the major tennis tournaments after
she tore her right hamstring during last year’s first set of a first-round match. Now that she has
decided to return, she is greeted by a new coach, Eric Hechtman, the same coach Venus
Williams, older sister of Serena, trains with.
Though this will be Serena’s 21st Wimbledon, she will be returning to the All England Club at 40 having not played any singles matches since last year’s Wimbledon.
Serena Williams will be going against Harmony Tan, 133th-ranked, on Tuesday. Though Williams used to be No. 1, she is far from that ranking as she is now 1204th. Though her ranking is low, she will still be the favorite on the grass as many people come to see if she is able to redeem her title as one of the Greatest Players of All Time.
Many questions about politics have been proposed to Serena during her interview time, such as her opinions on removing the constitutional right to have an abortion. Serena Williams chose not to share her viewpoint by saying, “I don’t have any thoughts that I’m ready to share right now on that decision.”
Unlike Serena, other tennis stars such as Gauff are eager to speak about the situation. Gauff
states that she was “obviously disappointed about the decision,”, and that she feels like “we’re almost going backwards.”
Though it might seem like Williams is just trying to get back into the environment of competing, that contrasts her real goals of this Wimbledon tournament. She replies, “You know the answer to that, c’mon now.” when a reporter asked what a good outcome at Wimbledon this year is.
The coach also strengthened this goal by saying, “She’s a champion, right? And she’s playing
Wimbledon for a reason, just like I think anybody that walks into the tournament, their goal is to win the event. And that’s our goal.” Though Williams is faced with the stress of returning and politics, she still has the mindset to win the entire tournament.
