The Oldest Male Panda in Captivity, An An, Dies at 35

Pandas have a friendly personality. They are loved by many people, but pandas are now endangered because of our growing towns encroaching on their habitat. People now are trying to help the pandas repopulate. Giant pandas tend to live longer in the well protected area like a zoo.

A male giant panda, An An, is one of these pandas living in a zoo. He lived at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park. He died at the age of 35, being the world’s oldest giant panda in captivity.

Lately, An An struggled to digest food and he only consumed water. An An also struggled with physical activities. He sat down longer and more often. Park officials and veterinarians of Ocean Park had to put him down.

An An had come to Hong Kong with a female panda, Jia Jia, in 1999. Jia Jia has the world record of the oldest giant panda in captivity. She died 2016, at the age of 38 or 14 human years.

One panda year is about three human years. A typical giant panda’s life span in the wild is about 15 to 20 panda years, while in human care, they live for about 30 years. Most giant pandas don’t live over 30 years. An An lived for 105 human years.

are many benefits to living in captivity. Giant pandas in a zoo get all of the things they want, like bamboo and water. They end up living much longer than wild pandas. Unlike wild baby pandas, which are typically solitary, baby pandas play together. Giant pandas aren’t missing out on anything from the wild, because pandas in the wild mostly just sit in the trees, which zoo pandas do as well.

Some people believe that people shouldn’t save pandas because they are not as important as other animals, but pandas do have an important role in their habitat. When they move around, seeds and plant substances collect on their fur. They also drop seeds, disposing them around the forest.
