Student Bill Hirst started a trend inspired by memes and overwhelming boredom that has gone primarily viral on Tiktok on July 1st, showing gatherings of teens heading to see the minions in the theaters.
The teens are shown pulling up to theaters to watch The Rise of Gru in business suits and tuxes. On TikTok, they have gone by the hashtag
#gentleminions
and now have over 140 million views.
This TikTok has not only helped the creator’s channel grow but has also helped increase the film’s popularity. This film grossed about $164 million in its first week. Considering that the
#gentleminions
had over 85 million views, it influenced many to watch The Rise of Gru. The original video has 10 million views and over 1.5 million likes.
Initially, two groups met coincidently while one was leaving, and one was going to watch the Rise of Gru. Bill Hirst, the 18-year-old behind the
#gentleminions
trend, couldn’t miss out on this epic opportunity to party at the movie even if they never met.
Even though most would think that this would be humiliating, when you are with your friends, or if there is a group of boys, they will feel unintimidated by almost anything. “Doing these types of things, you actually get a lot of stares,” said Devan Rajen, another 18-year-old student pictured in the video who posted the video from his own TikTok account. “People probably thought we were humiliating ourselves.”
Unfortunately, despite increasing sales for theaters, they have started to ban people from wearing suits or tuxes, especially if a large group of teenagers is involved. The ban began after there were noise complaints against the teens. However, this only caused more chaos as teens hid their suits under regular clothes and revealed their suits later once they got in.
The teenagers have claimed they had embarked on the prank after they were bored after having finished their year’s formal and were already wearing the suits. Later, more and more people joined the trend for fame.
“I didn’t like the movie,” Law confessed, “I thought it was mediocre at best. But I liked the atmosphere.”
“I think we’re just bored.” She added, “There’s not really anything else better to do.”
