Sydney McLaughlin has beaten the world record for the 400m hurdles multiple times over the past couple of years, jumping over any competitors in her way.

McLaughlin has been training tirelessly, surpassing anyone to get the Guinness World Record and holding her place as a gold medalist in the Olympics. Two weeks ago, she broke the world record for 400m hurdles for the fourth time in two years, with an astonishing 50.68 seconds, while others like Femke Bol from the Netherlands with a 52.27 time and Dalilah Muhammad finished third with a 53.13.

McLaughlin was born in central New Jersey and is the fastest woman to run the 400m hurdle as she beat Muhammad’s world record in 2021 at the Olympic trials and beat herself at the Tokyo Olympics not long after. Muhammad had still been right behind her tail throughout each race, though.

McLaughlin seems way ahead of the others competing against her, but she only needs to beat herself as her next opponent. This time, she had taken off 0.73 seconds from her previous world record, which was set not long ago. Even with these achievements, she sees space to grow her strength and strives to work harder to develop further.

“I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are ten barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think,” she said, adding: “I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.”

In 2019, her winning streak started after she finished second to Muhammad at the world championships in Doha, Qatar. After this, she has been known as one of the most competitive athletes in her field. Perhaps Bol will help push this motivation further in the next few years as she holds the seventh-fastest time in hurdling history.

McLaughlin is deciding with her coach what competitions to compete in; the 100 or 400m hurdles or a bunch of events. She is still willing to break her record and many more to come.

“My coach thinks there’s a lot more to be done,” she said.
