Recently, residents of Mildura, a town in Australia, witnessed a mysterious pink glow that illuminated the night sky the evening of July 20th. Some citizens suspected the light was an alien invasion or a solar flare. Turns out, the lights exposed the location of a secret facility.

Anne Webster, a lawmaker who represents the area in Australia’s Parliament said, “I was driving home and it was dark, and I noticed a very unusual, quite large pink glow. I thought it is very strange. My first thought was there [must] be a logical reason for this.” Webster was not the only person to witness this extraordinary scene. Local resident Tammy Szumowski and her family believed the world was coming to an end.

The scene spooked the 56,000 residents of the town. The facility’s security guard investigated the cause of the light, but realized it was attracting a lot of attention around Mildura, located 340 miles northwest of Melbourne.

Turns out, the red glow was caused by the company, Cann Group, which left the curtains that normally cover the red-spectrum LED lights open. The red-spectrum lights were later discovered to encourage the growth of marijuana.

According to the New York Times, the Cann Group was the first company to receive license in Australia to conduct cannabis research. The company had previously received a $1.4 million grant from the Victoria state government to develop a medical cannabis facility in a secret location until the location was revealed earlier this week.

The facility was formerly occupied by the Mildura Fruit Company which used the factory to grow grapes. The grapes used to supply wineries across the region.

According to Peter Crock, the chief executive of Cann Group, said, “We’ve resumed normal transmission but it definitely caught everyone’s attention in the meantime, any publicity is good publicity.”
