As the fifth month of the Russian invasion of Ukraine begins, many concerns have been raised about the treatment of Ukrainian citizens by Russian troops. There is global outrage as Russian forces abuse and torture people in the civilian areas of southern Ukraine they now control.

“Torture, inhumane treatment, as well as arbitrary detention and unlawful confinement of civilians, are among the apparent war crimes we have documented,” says Yulia Gorbunova, senior Ukraine researcher at Human Rights Watch says.

While the Geneva Conventions allows opposing sides in a war to hold combatants and civilians deemed threats to authority as prisoners of war, torture and abusive activity is forbidden. The Human Rights Watch has interviewed 71 victims who described being tortured or witnessing others face such treatment.

Since capturing the Ukrainian province of Kherson, Russian forces have grown increasingly repressive and brutal toward the civilians of the province. There is global outrage as unjustified violence towards civilians is exposed.
