In late June 2022, a sunken Roman cargo ship was examined. Researcher found several bronze statues, and the head of a statue of Hercules. The body of the statue of Hercules was originally found in 1900.
This ship was built when Greece was ruled by the Romans. In 1900, divers found 36 statues, including sculptures of Hermes, Apollo, and Hercules.
The scientists also found a bunch of bronze statues. In ancient times, bronze statues were super rare because they are normally melted and shaped into bronze coins or weapons.
This exploration of the ship came to a sudden stop in the summer of 1901, when a diver was killed and two were paralyzed by decompression sickness.
In 1976, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his team went back to studying the ship, where they found human skeletons.
The latest objects were found in the ship’s hull, which was blocked by huge boulders. The crew also found the legs of another statue, most of the ship’s equipment, and two human teeth. These items will be displayed in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
