A very big pink diamond, which is very rare, was found in South Africa. It is a 170-carat diamond, and it is thought to be the largest diamond found in the last 300 years. It weighs 34 grams.
The diamond was named the Lulo Rose after the mine where it was found.
“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the stage,” said Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s priest of minerals.
Pink diamonds are very rare, due to their rare chemical pattern found underground. Expert Joanna Hardy says it’s hard to say how much this one is worth before it’s cut.
Diamonds are made by compressing carbon that’s found deep in the ground. Then, pressure and heat squeeze the carbon until it is a diamond. Next, volcanos bring them up to the surface, where they can be found.
People have suggested making artificial diamonds, but some still agree that natural diamonds are better.
You may be wondering how diamonds get their color. They get their color from elements in the ground. Boron makes blue, nitrogen makes yellow, and so on.
Scientists don’t know what element makes them pink, but they think that it is from a change in the diamond’s structure while it is being created.
