Thousands of people holding banners and signs went marching on the streets of Washington on Saturday, June 11th. People were protesting because of the recent shooting in Texas that killed two teachers and many students at Robb Elementary School, and also because of the 10 customers shot at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. Protesters called for stricter gun control laws to prevent more shootings.
The number of shootings in the US is rising; in 2019, the number of incidents rose from 417 to 610 in 2020 all the way to 2022. Where there are now 267 more of these tragic in just the first half of the year according to the Gun Violence Archive. Even worse, they’ve been tracking the numbers since 2014 and they’ve said that before 2019 there were at least 400 killed or injured a year.
These protests have not been ignored. The Senate negotiators from the Democratic and Republican parties said that they have all agreed to improve gun safety measures. As quoted in the Dogo News article, “[t]oday, we are announcing a common-sense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe and reduce the threat of violence across our country.”
The senators announced, “[i]n the same article,”[f]amilies are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.” People think that the law should have a background check of people who are 21 years old or younger.
The senators sent the law to the lawmakers and hopefully, it gets passed before they leave for a two-week summer break on June 24, 2022. Hopefully, no more shootings occur in the meantime.
